KANGAR: Police have seized a shotgun believed to have been used by Perlis Mentri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.
The weapon was reportedly used during a shooting incident involving a sacrificial cow that allegedly went berserk at Dataran Lok 9 in Kuala Perlis last Thursday (May 28).
Kangar OCPD Asst Comm Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the seizure also involved nine rounds of buckshot ammunition to assist in the investigation.
According to him, the statement of the Perlis Mentri Besar has also been recorded following the incident.
The shooting occurred during the Kuala Perlis Grand Sacrificial Ritual Programme.
Police acted following a viral video and a subsequent police report received regarding the matter.
ACP Yusharifuddin said checks through the Licensing Division of the Kangar District Police Headquarters confirmed that Abu Bakar is the legal holder of a firearm licence for the weapon concerned.
Earlier, ACP Yusharifuddin said his department confirmed receiving a public police report at 4.51pm on Friday (May 29).
The report concerned a 38-second video recording depicting the incident that went viral on social media.
The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 (Act 206) for discharging a firearm in a public place.
If convicted, the offence carries a maximum penalty of one year’s imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both.
Meanwhile, he advised the public not to speculate or issue statements that could provoke any party.
He added that the police take seriously any act that could disrupt public order and will not hesitate to take firm action against those involved.
