IPOH: A video of an individual putting a cat in a sack has gone viral on TikTok.
In the one-minute 31-second video, the individual could be heard saying he was packing roti canai after being confronted by another person filming the incident.
The individual also declined to show what was inside the bag and could be heard saying his boss likes the cat and it would be sent to him.
In a statement issued, Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Chua Kok Lian said the police are aware of the viral video and believe the incident occurred near an eatery in Taman Melor in Teluk Intan.
"We also received a report from the eatery owner regarding the video.
"The police have conducted an investigation by identifying the individual in question, the actual location and to get the facts of the incident," he said.
He added that there could be an element of animal abuse in the incident.
"The police will work closely with the Veterinary Services Department to complete the investigation and take the necessary legal action.
"An investigation paper has been opened under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act. Those found guilty of animal abuse can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed for up to three years or both," he said.
ACP Chua said the public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified facts until the case has been investigated.
"Those with information about the incident are also urged to contact the police.
"The Hilir Perak police are serious towards animal abuse incidents and there will be no compromise on those who commit the act," he said.
