Student claims she was bullied by ‘Angels’ group

KOTA KINABALU: A group calling themselves “Angels” have landed in trouble after allegedly acting more like devils in a bullying incident near here recently.

Kota Kinabalu acting OCPD Supt Syed Lot Syed Abdul Rahman said police received a report from a 13-year-old girl on May 23 claiming she was assaulted by a group of students she knew through a chat group named “Angel”.

He said the victim alleged that she was attacked at around 8am on May 22, suffering bruises and other bodily injuries.

“According to the victim, she was brought to the area by two of the suspects before the rest ambushed her and began attacking her,” he said, adding that the suspects allegedly warned the victim not to speak about the incident or face worse consequences.

It is learnt that the incident stemmed from dissatisfaction among the girls following a misunderstanding, Supt Syed Lot said.

Several students and members of the public who were in the area had apparently witnessed the incident, with some recording videos that were later shared widely on social media.

The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, said Supt Syed Lot.

Police have also begun contacting the students involved, as well as their parents, to assist in investigations.

Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin said the department would give its full cooperation to police in investigating the case. He said the department was also conducting its own investigation to determine what had actually happened.

“If bullying is found to be involved, we will not compromise.”
