Kaamatan cheer as 200 Kota Belud families get food baskets

KOTA KINABALU: Some 200 families in the Kota Belud district received festive cheer this Kaamatan season as Yayasan PETRONAS distributed food baskets under its Uplifting Lives Festive programme.

The initiative reflects the spirit of gratitude, togetherness and community care synonymous with the harvest festival, said PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan regional office general manager Datuk Siti Ayu Abdul Wahab.

“Through the Uplifting Lives Festive programme, Yayasan PETRONAS hopes to support the well-being of families while continuing our commitment to creating a positive and lasting impact on communities across the country,” she said.

Held at Kampung Piasau on May 24, the handover ceremony took place amid ongoing Kaamatan celebrations – a cherished cultural tradition that honours the harvest season while strengthening bonds among families and neighbours.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III and Kadamaian assemblyman Datuk Ewon Benedick presented the festive food packs to selected recipients during the event.

“Kaamatan reminds us of the importance of gratitude, unity and caring for one another within the community.

“Contributions such as these reflect the spirit of togetherness that has long been part of our harvest celebration traditions, while helping ease preparations for families gathering with loved ones,” he said.

Distributed in phases throughout the festival by the Sabah Social Welfare Department, the food packs contained essential items such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, flour, tea and festive cookies.
