KOTA KINABALU: Traditions and cultural heritage must be preserved to go along with modernisation and changing times, said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah Tun Musa Aman.

He said this in his Pesta Kaamatan well wishes.

When extending his festive greetings to Sabahans, the state Governor said this festival remains one of Sabah’s most treasured cultural celebrations.

The festival is celebrated annually on May 30 and 31.

"Rooted in gratitude for a bountiful harvest and traditions passed down through generations, this festival symbolises the rich cultural heritage, enduring spirit and unity of the people of Sabah," he said.

"Although the role of paddy cultivation has evolved with modernisation, the true essence of Kaamatan as a celebration of thanksgiving, togetherness and mutual respect remains unchanged," Musa added.

He noted that Sabah’s diversity, comprising more than 30 ethnic groups and numerous sub-ethnic communities, continues to be its greatest strength.

Over the years, Kaamatan has grown into a unifying celebration embraced by all communities regardless of race, religion or background.

"The harmony and understanding shared among Sabahans continue to serve as an example to the nation," Musa said.

"We must continue rejecting divisive rhetoric, extremism and narrow sentiments that threaten the unity and goodwill we have nurtured for generations," he added.

The Governor said as Sabah progresses towards greater development and economic growth, it is important that no community or region is left behind.

He said continued emphasis must be placed on education, skills training, infrastructure, digital connectivity and economic opportunities.

This focus is particularly important in rural and interior areas.

"Our younger generation must also be equipped with knowledge, discipline, resilience and strong values to contribute meaningfully towards Sabah’s future," Musa stated.

"At the same time, we must continue preserving and honouring our cultural traditions, indigenous heritage and the values inherited from our forefathers," he added.

He said the traditions, languages, arts and customs of local communities were invaluable treasures that form the identity and soul of Sabah.

Musa reminded the people that it is a collective responsibility to ensure these legacies continue to thrive for future generations.

He called on everyone to reflect on the importance of gratitude, compassion and unity.

He also urged them to continue working together towards a peaceful, progressive and prosperous Sabah for all as they celebrate this meaningful occasion with family and loved ones.

"On this joyous occasion, my wife and I once again wish all Sabahans celebrating Pesta Kaamatan a Happy Harvest Festival," he said.

"Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan," he added.
