Sabah tourism sector urges review of diesel subsidy

KOTA KINABALU: The State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Jafry Ariffin, requests special consideration for Sabah's tourism sector in the diesel subsidy scheme due to local operational needs.

Jafry stated that the 200-litre monthly quota is insufficient for those in remote areas.

He said that many tourism operators, especially in island regions, are ineligible for the subsidy. This situation affects their business operations amid rising costs and low tourist arrivals, prompting calls for federal reassessment.

“The tourism sector is one of the main economic drivers in Sabah, where many residents depend on their livelihood; therefore, any policy must take into consideration the ground situation in Sabah to reduce costs and not affect the daily operations of the people,” said Jafry in a statement on Tuesday (June 30).

Jafry said he has communicated these concerns to relevant federal ministers for consideration.
