Sabah Fire Dept prepares for super El Nino

KOTA KINABALU: Faced with the possibility of a “super El Nino” weather cycle adversely affecting weather in Sabah, the state’s Fire and Rescue Department is reaching out directly to people on the ground.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Depart-ment operations division assistant director Muhammad Taquid-din Victor Doon said the department is working closely with local communities to create awareness via social media and on-the-ground events, including handing out flyers and infographics.

The department increases “eyes” on fires with this practice during the dry weather caused by the south-west monsoon when there is less rainfall.

The season is expected to be hotter than usual this year as the monsoon season is coinciding with what meteorological agencies are calling a “super El Nino” weather phenomenon this year.

Muhammad Taquiddin said Sabah’s Fire and Rescue Department is logistically prepared for drought and forest fires.

“We have coordinated with all stations in different zones and are increasing our monitoring of open burnings, fires and other incidents which may occur.”

Taquiddin said the department is maintaining an 80% workforce at the moment as there is no directive currently from headquarters to freeze leave.
