PETALING JAYA: There is no need to rush to change to the latest MyKad when they are available as current ones will remain valid for all official purposes, including confirming eligibility for government subsidies, says the National Registration Department.
In a statement on Friday (May 29) it said that the official start date for the new MyKad would be announced at a later date, and launched by the Prime Minister.
"The issuance of the new MyKad will be carried out in phases at the NRD headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected offices through an appointment system, before it is expanded nationwide in stages. This approach is to ensure smooth implementation, orderly processing and to avoid congestion at counters.
"The NRD has set a priority for issuing new MyKads for applicants who have made appointments through its appointment system, as well as holders of the plastic identity card (KPP), high-grade identity card (KPT) and MyKad version 1 (without ghost image).
"At the same time, holders of KPP, KPT and MyKad version 1 are required to gradually replace them with the new MyKad within three years," it said.
The NRD added that it is committed to a smooth and systematic implementing of the new MyKad.
"The NRD assures that personal data and information of MyKad holders will continue to be protected through security features and data protection controls set by the government," it said.
