Commuting accidents make up half of PERKESO cases

SEPANG: A total of 46,542, or 50.9%, of the 91,456 accident cases recorded in 2025 involved commuter accidents to and from work, according to the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO).

Its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said the statistics reflected an alarming trend, particularly among motorcyclists, adding that most fatalities involved family breadwinners.

“This worrying situation calls for action that goes beyond a reactive approach because the disbursement of PERKESO benefits alone is not the sole solution to this issue,” he said during the launch of the Malaysian Riders Campaign (MyRider) here yesterday.

He said PERKESO, in collaboration with the Traffic Police Investigation and Enforcement Department, launched the campaign to strengthen efforts to prevent road accidents, reported Bernama.

The campaign also involves various agencies and industry partners, including the Transport Ministry and the Road Transport Department, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing motorcycle rider safety in Malaysia.

“Through the MyRider campaign, I want to convey a simple yet meaningful message that we must together cultivate more responsible, prudent and safety-conscious Malaysian riders, in line with the slogan ‘Malaysian Riders: Safe. Prudent. Dignified’.”
