Seremban cops arrest babysitter after infant dies

SEREMBAN: Police have detained a babysitter after the death of a seven-month-old boy under her care.

District OCPD Asst Comm Azahar Abdul Rahim said police picked up the suspect after doctors at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar pronounced the victim dead on Tuesday (May 19) night.

"The victim's mother lodged a report claiming that she received a call from the babysitter, who told her that her son had lost consciousness.

"The baby was then rushed to a nearby clinic and then to the hospital where doctors performed CPR but later pronounced the baby dead," he said in a statement on Wednesday (May 20).

ACP Azahar said preliminary investigations found that the babyistter has been looking after the victim since December.

"Our initial probe revealed that the babysitter had put the deceased to sleep in a cradle, with a silicone-type pacifier placed in the infant's mouth," he said.

He said the victim's remains were sent to Hospital Rembau for a post-mortem.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(A) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for jail of up to 20 years, or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both upon conviction.
