GEORGE TOWN: Some 700 smartly dressed motorbike enthusiasts on vintage and modern motorcycles took to the streets of Penang to support prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.
Their efforts raised about RM3,100 for the Penang edition of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR), with the proceeds channelled to the event’s headquarters in Sydney, Australia.
Businessman Jonathan Chang, 46, who has taken part in the annual event since 2015, said the fundraising effort held special meaning for him, as his father is a prostate cancer survivor.
“Fortunately, it was detected early. With treatment, medication and a proper diet, my father is now 70 and recovered four years ago,” he added.
Chang, who rode a 2019 Moto Guzzi V85 TT, said prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, and regular check-ups are crucial.
Accountant Chim Wen Hong, 37, arrived with his six-year-old daughter Janelle on his 44-year-old Honda XL125.
“In 2019, I had to get a mechanic to source replacement parts from Thailand, and it took seven months to restore the motorcycle,” he said.
Chim said his mother had battled breast cancer, making the ride personally significant.
“The DGR event allows people to release tension through riding together. This promotes mental health awareness,” he said.
He added that the Honda is one of his most treasured possessions, and he intends to keep riding it as long as possible.
Penang health committee chairman Daniel Gooi said the event showed how a shared passion could be channelled for a good cause.
“Far too often, men tend to overlook their physical and mental health and may hesitate to seek help or speak openly about the challenges they face.
“Through initiatives such as the DGR, we can encourage openness, promote early awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding men’s health issues,” he said.
What began as a stylish gathering of a few riders in 2012 has grown into a global event held in more than 1,000 cities across over 100 countries.
The event has raised more than RM270mil for prostate cancer research and men’s health programmes worldwide.
