Vandals desecrate Christian prayer site on popular Penampang hiking hill

KOTA KINABALU: A dedicated Christian prayer area on Sinundu Hill, which is also a favourite hiking spot for nature lovers in Penampang near here, has been vandalised.

Photos of the damage were shared on various social media platforms, causing an uproar among locals.

A crucifix, statues of the Virgin Mary, crosses that were put up along the route and some other items were torn down, smashed and broken.

Many locals called for the authorities to carry out investigations, while some urged for witnesses to come forward and provide information on who the perpetrators were.

There was also one person who offered tokens for anyone who could point out the culprit.

Penampang police chief Superintendent Sammy Newton when contacted said they have received a police report over the matter.

Newton added that the police will update details soon.

This is a calm area for believers who hike the hill to reach the prayer hut, carrying out meditations or just short prayers during sunset or sunrise.
