All cattle in Melaka to get its own QR code under state initiative


JASIN: Melaka is implementing introduce a QR tagging system for livestock, aimed at improving animal traceability, says Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The Melaka Chief Minister said this first-of-its-kind initiative would be part of efforts modernise the sector through smart technology.

"Each animal will have a QR code containing details such as the owner's particulars, farm location and health records.

"With QR tagging, owners can be identified immediately through the system developed by the state government.

"Information can be verified instantly if livestock are reported missing or smuggled," he said after launching the Livestock QR Tagging System in Semujuk here on Saturday (May 16).

He said with outdated methods, some owners fail to control their animals, leading to road accidents and even fatalities.

Ab Rauf noted that state Veterinary Department records show that there are more than 32,000 heads of cattle reared in Melaka.

"More than 50 complaints involving straying livestock have been recorded, while 835 road accidents linked to such animals have been reported since 2023.

Ab Rauf also said data collected would help regulate livestock numbers in a more organised manner and strengthen food security planning.

He added that the first phase was implemented in Ayer Molek involving 800 cattle.

He said installation of QR tags would be free of charge throughout 2026, and RM5 fee per animal would be imposed starting 2027.
