One dead, two missing after falling from same bridge in two separate incidents

IPOH: One person died while two others, including a two-year-old boy remain missing, after they fell from the Sultan Nazrin Shah Bridge in Bagan Datuk in two separate incidents on Friday.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Sayani Saidon said in the first incident, a 42-year-old man, is believed to have fallen from the bridge at 11.36am.

He said firefighters from the Hutan Melintang station arrived at the scene at 12.11pm and found the victim’s motorcycle parked on the bridge shoulder.

“A surface search using boats was launched within a 3km radius of the location where the victim was believed to have fallen.

“The department’s Water Rescue Team, which arrived at 4.33pm, continued surface searches as strong river currents made diving operations unsafe.

“While the search was underway, police informed rescuers at about 7.15pm that a second incident had occurred at the same bridge involving a 38-year-old woman and her two-year-old son,” he said in a statement on Friday (July 17).

He added that firefighters managed to rescue the woman, after finding her floating in the river.

“She was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being rushed by an ambulance to Teluk Intan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“Her two-year-old son, remains missing.

“The search and rescue operation, involving 13 firefighters, the police and the civil defence department, was suspended at 8.30pm due to poor weather and safety concerns,” he said.

Search efforts are scheduled to resume at 8am on Saturday.
