Fireman hurt after falling into drain while battling blaze at JB apartment


JOHOR BARU: A 30-year-old fireman was injured afrer falling into a 1.2m (4ft)-deep drain while fighting a fire at an apartment in Permas Jaya here on Friday (May 15) morning.

Johor Jaya fire station operations commander M. Haridas said the department received an emergency call at 7.07am saying a fire had broken out at a fifth-floor unit of the apartments along Jalan Permas 7.

"Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire involved a 750sq m unit, with about 90% of the structure destroyed.

"The blaze also spread to a neighbouring unit, causing light damage," he said in a statement.

Haridas said firefighters carried out operations using water from a hydrant and one fire engine.

"During the operation, firefighter Ihsan Abdul Razak suffered injuries to his waist and hip after falling into a drain.

"He received treatment following the incident," he said.

A total of 19 personnel were involved in the operation.

The fire was extinguished at 9.16am, Haridas added.
