KUALA LUMPUR: The allocation for the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has been increased by an additional RM50mil this year, bringing the total allocation for 2026 to RM150mil, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a speech on Sunday (May 10), the Prime Minister commended Mitra's recent performance in implementing programmes for the Indian community with the existing RM100mil allocation for 2026.

"Mitra is a special programme because it can incorporate the views of India's elite scholars.

"However, we must improve the programme so that it truly reaches the groups who need it.

"I agree that, starting this year, we should increase its allocation by RM50mil," he said during a meet-and-greet session with Indian undergraduates at Universiti Malaya.

Earlier, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan requested that the allocation for Mitra be increased for the development of the Indian community in the country.

Commenting further, Anwar said the government's approach under the Malaysia Madani framework is based on fairness and inclusivity.

He added that efforts to uplift disadvantaged communities are not limited to programmes under Mitra alone, but are also carried out through initiatives under various ministries, including the Human Resources Ministry and Finance Ministry programmes aimed at eradicating hardcore poverty and assisting the people.

"This fund is for the Indian community, and not all members of the Indian community are well-off.

"In fact, many still remain marginalised and poor, whether on estates or among workers.

"Today, when the Indian community requires our support, we must help them just as we have helped the community in Pulau Banggi," he said.

Anwar also assured that the government would continue protecting the welfare of all Malaysians irrespective of racial background.

"We must make the right decision, and it must be based on the principle of justice, which is what Madani stands for.

"I also want to give an assurance that this Madani government, whatever challenges we may face, will never renege on our promise that every Malaysian, regardless of race or background, will be given the fullest protection and support.

"I give you my word. I will honour that," he said.
