Cloud seeding starts in Kedah, Perlis, due to critically low dam levels

PETALING JAYA: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) have started cloud seeding operations in Kedah and Perlis to address critical water levels at dams in the states.

In a statement on Sunday (May 10), Nadma said that two cloud seeding operations will be conducted on Sunday until next Tuesday and from May 17 to May 19.

"Today’s operation carried four barrels equivalent to 6,000 litres of salt solution using an air force C-130 aircraft. The targeted locations are the Timah Tasoh dam in Perlis and four areas in Kedah, namely the Ahning, Pedu, Beris, and Muda dams.

"This cloud seeding operation is one of the efforts to help increase the dam water levels from continuing to decline,” Nadma said, adding that continued low levels would disrupt water supply for agriculture and residences in the northern region.

"Although there has been considerable rainfall in the northern areas over the past few days, the amount of rainwater flowing into the dams has remained very minimal,” it said.
