JOHOR BARU: Individuals whose social media accounts are blocked or content removed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can appeal through a special tribunal, says Teo Nie Ching.
The Deputy Communications Minister said such disputes could be brought to the Communications, Multimedia and Online Safety Appeal Tribunal for consideration.
“If a person is unhappy with actions taken by the MCMC online, they can bring the matter to the Communications, Multimedia and Online Safety Appeal Tribunal under the Ministry.
“This is an ad hoc tribunal that is not chaired or heard by MCMC officers, but by a High Court judge with at least two tribunal members,” she said.
She said this when met by reporters after handing over aid to some 235 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) high achievers at a mall here on Sunday (May 10).
Teo was responding to a question on the action that should be taken if an individual’s social media account is restricted.
She said the tribunal allows complainants to file an appeal in a more affordable manner without having to go through lengthy court procedures.
Teo also stressed that MCMC is an independent body whose decisions are not influenced by any party, including the executive.
“Although I am a deputy minister, and Datuk Fahmi Fadzil is the Communications Minister, we do not handle complaints from the public and we are not involved in hearing or making MCMC’s decisions,” she added.
