PETALING JAYA: Known not just for her beauty but also bravery, behind the elegance of a cheongsam was a woman who lived a life of courage and high-risk missions.
Wong Kooi Fong, an ex-superintendent of police better known as Blossom Wong, died yesterday at the age of 87.
It is learnt that Wong had been admitted to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) following a stroke caused by a brain haemorrhage.
Dr Christina Blossom Welch said her mother breathed her last at about 9am at HKL while receiving treatment.
“Her body has since been brought home for funeral arrangements,” she said when contacted.
Wong’s journey into policing began a few months before Merdeka.
After training, she was assigned as an Inspector in the Special Branch and her main task was to go undercover to obtain information on the communist movement.
As a Special Branch officer, she was often clad in cheongsam to hide her identity, which earned Wong the title “spy in a cheongsam”.
She later served in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where she was involved in anti-vice operations in Kuala Lumpur.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Wong retired from the police force in 1993 after more than 36 years of service.
Dr Welch said her mother was responsible, firm and disciplined and raised her children to be independent.
“Despite her duties as a police officer, mother was always present when her children needed her,” she said.
“She had been in good health just the day before her passing.”
Dr Welch said wake services will be held tomorrow and on Monday at Nirvana 2, Kuala Lumpur, followed by burial on Tuesday.
