Sabah rep urges review of budget cuts

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan’s Likas assemblyman Tham Yun Fook says the Federal Government should review planned budget cuts to healthcare and education that affect Sabah.

Tham said that Sabah’s healthcare system already faces severe shortages of doctors and specialists, with rural clinics under staffed and lacked resources with hospitals in the state already struggling.

He said cuts to healthcare funding would worsen service gaps and delay infrastructure upgrades.

On higher education, he said many Sabah students relied on public universities and scholarships.

Tham said reports showed the Finance Ministry was considering cuts in healthcare and higher education.

“Weakening healthcare and education support will only deepen inequality and restrict talent growth,” he added.

Tham said the government should explain the proposals and keep development fair.
