All on board for Asean energy security push

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia supports Asean’s efforts to strengthen regional energy security following geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East that could potentially disrupt energy supply, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the matter was discussed during the Special Asean Energy Ministers’ Meeting held virtually yesterday, focusing on the implications of the current situation in the Middle East on energy stability in the region.

“Malaysia fully supports Asean’s efforts to strengthen existing mechanisms, expand expertise-sharing and coordinate response measures in facing any disruptions arising from geopolitical uncertainties,” Fadillah posted on Facebook, Bernama reported.

Fadillah, who is also the Energy, Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said Malaysia also shared several targeted measures being implemented by the government to improve energy efficiency, including subsidy rationalisation, the introduction of flexible working hours and the promotion of energy-saving practices among consumers.

He also emphasised the importance of closer cooperation among Asean member states in strengthening regional energy security through the Asean Power Grid initiative, which was agreed upon last year.
