Statements taken from 21 over royal insult post

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have recorded the statements of 21 people in connection with the investigation on a Facebook post that allegedly insulted the Sultan of Selangor.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the probe was initiated following the existence of an offensive image on social media which insulted the Sultan of Selangor on a Facebook account on Saturday.

“A total of 21 police reports have been lodged nationwide on the post.

“So far, 21 people have been called in to have their statements recorded to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, he said.

“We have identified the owner or administrator of the Facebook account involved, and investigations are ongoing, including the seizure of devices believed to have been used to upload the content,” he added.

Comm Kumar said the investigation is being conducted by the CID Special Investigation Unit with the cooperation of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

“We will take stern action without compromise against anyone who misuses social media for unlawful purposes, including matters related to race, religion and royalty (3R).

“Freedom of speech under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution has its limits.

“The public is advised to remain prudent and responsible when making statements or sharing content in public spaces or on social media,” he said.
