Retired judge a fitting choice to head MACC, says Anwar

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The appointment of Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner was made after careful consideration of his judicial background and professional experience, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).

The Prime Minister said the retired High Court judge is not associated with any major business interests or political parties, making him suitable to lead the anti-graft agency.

“It is still too early to assess, but he comes from the judiciary and is not involved in any large businesses or political parties.

“I believe he is suitable to steer the MACC and further strengthen its capabilities,” the Prime Minister told reporters at the ceremony to celebrate the recognition of Kubang Semang National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) as a Digital Transformation Centre under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Anwar also expressed appreciation to outgoing MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki for his service and contributions.

“First, we record our appreciation to the outgoing MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who carried out his duties to the best of his ability.

“Now it is time for the new chief commissioner.”

Abdul Halim’s appointment, effective May 13, had received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and will be for a two-year term.

“I discussed this with His Majesty yesterday (Friday) and considered this candidate. Typically, such appointments are for two years,” the Prime Minister added.

Earlier in his speech, Anwar said the digital transformation agenda must benefit the majority of the population.

Anwar added that rapid advances in digital technology and AI have reshaped education and knowledge systems, creating new challenges for both educators and learners.

“Digital transformation, once seen as new, is now mainstream and increasingly essential.”

He stressed that digital literacy and technological understanding must be strengthened from an early stage, given the fast pace of change in knowledge development and the need to ensure no group is left behind.
