Azam rules out talk of political future after leaving MACC

KUALA LUMPUR: Staying physically healthy is on the cards for Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic) once his contract at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) ends next month.

Azam, whose tenure as the chief commissioner will end on May 12, said he has not decided on immediate plans but stressed that his focus is to stay active.

“I remain in good health and will continue to stay active through activities such as jogging and cycling,” he told reporters after an event in Negri Sembilan yesterday.

He dismissed any speculation about entering politics, stressing that he is not a political figure.

“I am a public servant. My duty has always been to serve the rakyat,” he added.

Azam urged all MACC officers and personnel to give their full cooperation to the incoming chief commissioner.

“Everyone at MACC must set aside any differences and continue strengthening the agency. I am confident that the excellence of MACC will continue to be upheld by its officers under the new leadership,” he said.

Azam also expressed his gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for the trust placed in him throughout his tenure, which saw his contract extended three times.

Azam was made MACC chief commissioner on March 9, 2020. When he retired in 2023 at 60, he was given a one-year extension.

Azam got his second extension in May 2024. In May 2025, he was given another one-year extension.
