Melaka assembly sits for last term before state polls

MELAKA: The Melaka Legislative Assembly has entered its final term before a state election must be held in line with democratic practice, says Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam.

The Yang Di-Pertua Negeri said the electoral process must be managed with the integrity that ensures continued public confidence in the democratic system.

"As we approach the end of this term, the state will undergo a state election as part of the democratic process that must be respected and preserved,” he said when opening the 15th State Legislative Assembly at Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh here on Friday (April 24).

He stressed that all parties must ensure comprehensive preparations, including logistics, security and the overall conduct of the election, are carried out smoothly, transparently and professionally.

"Integrity must always be upheld to ensure that the people’s trust in the democratic system remains strong,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ali expressed hope that the final term would serve as a crucial platform to strengthen policies, refine implementation and evaluate the state’s achievements as the current administration nears its conclusion.

He also called on assemblymen to conduct debates with maturity, decorum and mutual respect, in line with the principles of the Rukun Negara.

"I hope this sitting will proceed smoothly and in an orderly manner with members debating issues with wisdom, courtesy and a strong sense of responsibility.

"At the same time, the focus must remain on delivering the best possible service to the people,” he said.

Dr Mohd Ali also conveyed his appreciation to the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh for its continued commitment to driving the state's progress and achievements.

The current state administration’s term ends in December, with the state election required to be held by February 2027 at the latest.
