Jalan Bercham will be partially closed from May 1 for drainage upgrade

IPOH: A section of Jalan Bercham will be temporarily closed from May 1 to facilitate drainage upgrade works to address frequent flash floods in the area.

Ipoh City Council (MBI) said in a statement on Wednesday (April 22) that the project, located in the Bercham Industrial Area, is expected to take about 45 days, with completion targeted around June 15.

The council said the works are necessary as the existing drainage system can no longer accommodate water flow, particularly during heavy rainfall, resulting in recurring flash floods.

“The closure will enable the installation of a box culvert across Jalan Bercham, while also taking into account the presence of major underground utilities such as Gas Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Lembaga Air Perak (LAP), Telekom Malaysia and Maxis.

“To minimise disruption, traffic diversions will be carried out in stages.

“Motorists heading towards Pekan Bercham will be rerouted via Jalan Hala Industri Bercham 1, Hala Industri Bercham 2 and Persiaran Bercham Utara 11, while those travelling towards Tambun will use a temporary road constructed within the project site,” the statement said.

MBI advised road users to remain cautious, comply with temporary traffic signage, follow instructions from on-site personnel, and plan their journeys in advance.

The council also apologised for any inconvenience caused and called for public patience, stressing that the project is essential to improving drainage capacity and mitigating flash flood risks along Jalan Bercham and in surrounding areas.
