IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has mobilised emergency response teams to assist flood victims in Manjoi and several surrounding areas here following days of heavy rain that triggered flooding and storm damage across the city.
Housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng said the council has been on high alert and acted swiftly to ensure public safety and restore the affected areas.
She said among the immediate measures taken were road closures in inundated areas, removal of fallen trees, clearing of debris obstructing public routes, and the phased collection of bulk waste and damaged household items.
“MBI also inspected flash-flood hotspots, including roadways, drains and drainage systems under its jurisdiction, while teams removed hazards such as dislodged zinc roofing sheets and other dangerous debris.
“The operations involved personnel and machinery from several MBI departments,” she said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 18).
Ng said among the sites where work has been carried out are Jalan Perpaduan, Sungai Rokam, Jalan Istana near the State Secretariat building, Villa Perpaduan in Bercham, and Laluan Niaga Simee 1.
She said emergency teams also installed traffic management measures, including safety cones and plastic barriers, in affected areas, and undertook slope stabilisation work at landslide sites such as Lebuh Sungai Senam.
“MBI is working with several other government agencies involved.
“MBI’s primary role is focused on clean-up operations, waste management and maintenance of urban infrastructure under its jurisdiction,” she said.
She said that despite the response taking place during the Chinese New Year public holiday period, MBI personnel remained on duty to safeguard the safety and welfare of residents.
“The state government, through the Housing and Local Government portfolio, will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that aid and follow-up measures are implemented promptly and effectively,” she added.
