UMT student drowns attempting to save friend in Lata Ulu Kasar


BANDAR PERMAISURI: A female student of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Gong Badak Campus, Kuala Nerus, drowned while trying to save her friend who was drowning at Lata Ulu Kasar here on Sunday (April 19).

Setiu OCPD Supt Mohd Zain Mat Dris said the victim Suraya Hassan, 22, who was from Batu Pahat, Johor, along with seven other friends from the same university, had visited the picnic spot.

He said the police were alerted to the incident through an emergency call at about 1.48pm.

"Initial investigations found that the incident occurred while the victim was taking a bath, and another friend, Nur Najwa Farina Mohamed, 25, found that her friend, identified as Adilah, was having difficulties in the pool.

"They both tried to save Adilah but Suraya drowned while Najwa also almost drowned was saved," he said in a statement.

Mohd Zain said the surviving victim was rushed to Setiu Hospital and given outpatient treatment while Suraya's body was sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem. - Bernama
