Mohd Khaled: Malacca Strait remains secure despite global tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has stressed that security and stability in the Strait of Malacca remain firmly intact, despite growing global geopolitical uncertainty.

“What is happening in other regions does not necessarily happen here. We have a different context, history and cooperation mechanisms,” said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin

He said this at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026 exhibition at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) here on Sunday (April 19).

“Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore share the responsibility of ensuring that this route remains safe, stable and open for global trade,” he said.

He added that Southeast Asian countries have long adopted diplomacy and regional cooperation to ensure continued stability, thereby avoiding large-scale conflicts.

Commenting on concerns over possible spillover effects from external conflicts, he said there are no indications that such a situation will occur in the Strait of Malacca.

He also pointed out the importance of platforms like DSA, which he described as neutral spaces where countries and defence-industry participants can interact without influencing Malaysia’s foreign-policy stance. He noted that attending the exhibition should not be seen as a political statement but as part of industry collaboration and the fulfilment of national defence needs.

“DSA is a professional and industry-focused platform. It also allows Malaysia to assess the best technologies and capabilities for the country’s needs,” he added.
