Multi-agency retreat on scams set in coming weeks, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: A multi-agency retreat to address scams will be held in the coming weeks, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said it would involve the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the police, banking institutions, and other stakeholders to examine gaps in enforcement, legal provisions, and inter-agency coordination.

He said he had also chaired a meeting on the matter last Thursday (April 9).

“It was also agreed that a retreat session will be held to examine specific issues in detail from legal and implementation perspectives, including cross-ministerial and cross-agency coordination, as well as integrated action,” he said.

Fahmi said this after officiating at the Universiti Malaya (UM) Public Health Awareness Campaign in Pantai Dalam on Saturday (April 18).

The Star reported that online job scams targeting youths have shown a worrying spike over the past two years.

CCID director Comm Datuk Rusdi Md Isa said that, as of March this year, an average of two cases were reported daily.

“MCMC is also working closely with the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the matter,” he said.
