KOTA BARU: The second victim of the accident at SMK Tanjong Mas, Zara Aftar Zamzuri, is showing positive progress and has been scheduled for a grafting procedure on Monday (April 20).
Zara, 13, has been transferred to a first-class ward at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) for further treatment.
Kelantan Health Director Datuk Dr Mohd Azman Yacob said the student was moved to Ward 10 after successfully undergoing her first surgery last week, which addressed a fractured leg as well as injuries to her face and ear.
He said Zara is scheduled to undergo a grafting procedure on Monday to treat injuries to her earlobe.
"The previous surgery went smoothly. The next procedure will be carried out by a plastic surgeon using specialised materials to reconstruct the affected earlobe,” he told reporters at the opening ceremony of the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport new terminal, here today.
He added that during the incident, the victim’s ear wound was filled with road debris and tar, and the first surgery involved wound debridement.
"Only after the wound shows good new tissue growth can the grafting procedure be performed,” he said.
In addition to physical treatment, he said the hospital is also providing psychological first aid to Zara and her family to support emotional recovery following the trauma of the incident.
He said therapy sessions involving psychiatrists will be conducted continuously, depending on the patient’s response, to ensure emotional stability.
Commenting on her discharge, Dr Mohd Azman said there is no rush, and the hospital will ensure that wounds in sensitive areas are fully healed before she is allowed to return home.
"Close monitoring in the ward is important to prevent the risk of infection,” he said.
In the April 12 incident, Zara was seriously injured, while another student, Nur Fatimatul Hawa Mohd Azaudin, 13, was pronounced dead at the scene after they were struck by a vehicle driven by a teacher. - Bernama
