Disabled man dies in fire at Sibu budget hotel

SIBU: A 43-year-old person with a disability (OKU) was burned to death after a fire broke out in a budget hotel room along Jalan Tukang Besi early Saturday (April 18) morning.

The victim has been identified as Johnathan Goh Yow Chyang.

Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Department chief Andy Ali said an emergency call was received at 6.53am reporting smoke coming from the hotel.

“Ten firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found a room on the ground floor completely engulfed in flames,” he said.

The team carried out extinguishing operations using a 200-foot hose stream and auxiliary hose lines. The fire was brought under control two hours later.

“Upon inspection at the scene, a male victim was found in the toilet and was confirmed dead. The victim was later handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

He added that the room was completely destroyed in the blaze.
