PETALING JAYA: Perlis has postponed its state assembly meeting which was supposed to commence on Tuesday (April 21).

State assembly secretary Mohd Anwar Shahul Hameed conveyed this to assemblymen in a letter dated April 17.

Both the opening and the first meeting of the fourth session of the 15th State Assembly scheduled from April 21 to 23, have been postponed to a yet-to-be-determined date.

The letter was also sent to the Mentri Besar, state assembly speaker and other high-ranking officials including those from neighbouring states.

Perlis state assembly speaker Rus'sele Eizan confirmed the matter to The Star.

"The letter was issued by the secretary," he said without divulging the reason for the postponement.

Tuesday's meeting would have been the first since the political crisis in December 2025, when several Perikatan Nasional assemblymen withdrew support for then-mentri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

Eight Perikatan assemblymen – three from PAS and five from Bersatu – reportedly submitted statutory declarations withdrawing their support.

Mohd Shukri resigned on Dec 25, citing health factors.

The three PAS assemblymen, Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), subsequently had their party memberships terminated and their seats declared vacant.

Both PAS and Bersatu reportedly submitted one candidate each for the mentri besar position.

Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah was later named the new Mentri Besar without snap polls being called.

The state assembly has 15 seats.
