New icy sighting at Kinabalu Park substation

Frosty formation: According to Sabah Parks, the ice sighting followed the dry and low humidity levels around Mount Kinabalu throughout the week.

KOTA KINABALU: Ice has formed again at the Panalaban substation at Kinabalu Park.

The ice formations were recorded yesterday at 3,272m above sea-level.

According to Sabah Parks, the phenomenon followed the dry and low humidity levels around Mount Kinabalu throughout the week.

“This situation causes a significant drop in temperature at high altitude, causing ice to form on the surface of plants and around the Panalaban base camp area,” Sabah Parks said in a Facebook post.

It said ice formations are natural phenomena that occur periodically on high altitude areas of Mount Kinabalu, especially during bright and dry weather as well as low temperatures from night to dawn.

Sabah Parks urged all climbers, mountain guides, porters and staff members on the Panalaban area to be careful, wear appropriate clothing, stay hydrated and follow safety regulations from the park management and personnel.

“We will continue to monitor weather conditions and temperatures in high altitude areas to ensure the safety of visitors and staff members,” it assured.

The formation of ice or mild snowflakes has been recorded on Mount Kinabalu from time to time over the years.
