Strong ties via Azec to ensure stable energy supply, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains committed to strengthening regional cooperation through the Asia Zero Emission Community (Azec) to ensure a stable, sufficient and resilient energy supply, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said recent developments in the Middle East, particularly affecting the Strait of Hormuz, serves as a reminder that a stable energy supply is critical to ensure economic resilience and to safeguard the well-being of the people.

“As an energy producer, including of liquefied natural gas, Malaysia will continue to play a constructive role in supporting regional energy security while diversifying energy sources.

“This includes renewable energy and strengthening our energy system in line with national development priorities,” he said in a social media post, Bernama reported.

The Prime Minister participated in the Azec Plus Online Summit on Energy Resilience at the invitation of the government of Japan.

On another matter, Anwar said efforts will be intensified to bring home the remaining crew of Berkat Tuah, the offshore support vessel still stranded at Hamriyah Port in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

He said efforts are being coordinated through close cooperation between Wisma Putra, the Malaysian Embassy in the UAE and relevant agencies.

Anwar said this after meeting one of the Malaysian crew member, Muhammad Kamal Idhamuddin Kamal Arifin, who safely returned to Malaysia after being stranded at the port with fellow crew members for seven months.

“With continuous efforts, Muhammad Kamal and several of his colleagues have finally been brought home safely.

“Efforts are now being stepped up to ensure the remaining crew members can return as soon as possible,” he said.

The Prime Minister assured that the government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare and safety of Malaysians abroad.

He expressed hope that those still stranded would remain strong in facing the situation.
