Hamzah to reveal future plans tomorrow

PETALING JAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin is expected to announce his political direction in Melaka tomorrow.

According to sources, the Larut MP is expected to shed light on whether he will lead a new political outfit and whether he and a group of aligned MPs intend to remain within Perikatan Nasional.

“His announcement will mainly revolve around Malay unity and his political direction ahead of state and general elections,” said a source yesterday.

Hamzah was sacked from Bersatu on Feb 13.

PAS, the component party with the highest number of seats in the Opposition, had earlier said that a new Opposition Leader would be appointed from among its MPs.

This followed the appointment of PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the new Perikatan chairman.

On April 3, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the name of the new Opposition Leader would be finalised before the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes in June.

Hamzah has since remained coy about his political direction and has pushed back against criticism that his post-exit actions were improper, insisting that he still commands legitimacy under the Perikatan banner.

“I am still with Perikatan. Even until today, I contested under the letter of appointment issued by Perikatan,” he said.
