MELAKA: Plans for a Barisan Nasional-Perikatan Nasional electoral pact for the state election have intensified, with opposition leader Datuk Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub saying that talks between leaders of both coalitions will begin soon.
He said discussions between Melaka Barisan and Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and Parti Wawasan Negara president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin would be held soon to chart a possible electoral understanding ahead of the state polls.
The Bemban assemblyman, however, declined to reveal the number of seats expected to be contested under any potential arrangement.
“I can’t reveal the number of state seats expected to be contested by our side, but I am optimistic that Barisan and Perikatan will reach an electoral understanding,” he said in an interview.
Dr Mohd Yadzil said the outcome of the Negri Sembilan election sent a clear signal that voters wanted political unity and meaningful change.
“In my view, the election carried a message far greater than merely a change of state government.
“It proved that when leaders are prepared to put aside political ego, show statesmanship and place the interests of the people, voters will respond with confidence and support,” he said.
With attention now turning to Melaka, where the state election is expected to be held in October or November, Dr Mohd Yadzil expressed hope the understanding achieved in Negri Sembilan would be replicated here.
“I hope this spirit of unity will not stop with Negri Sembilan and Melaka but will continue through to the 16th General Election,” he added.
The term of the Melaka state assembly expires in December. By law, the election must be conducted within 60 days of the assembly’s dissolution.
On Sunday, Ab Rauf had said that Barisan remained open to working with any political party under a “Barisan Plus” formula for the upcoming state election.
Ab Rauf said the coalition welcomed discussions with any political party interested in cooperating for the state polls, although any agreement would ultimately depend on the strengths of each party.
