SIBU: Illegal electronic waste worth RM1.82mil was seized, and 12 people were arrested in a statewide operation in Sarawak on April 6.

The General Operations Force Sarawak Brigade led the operation targeting the unlicensed collection and processing of electronic waste.

The operation, called Ops Hazard 3.0, covered 10 locations in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri. State General Operations Force Brigade Commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Lim Bak Phai said those detained were 10 locals and two foreigners.

Among the seized items were electrical wires and cables, electronic parts, used batteries, tyres and processing equipment. Officers also confiscated vehicles and containers believed to have been used in the activities, according to Lim.

"The joint operation involved the Environment Department, Inland Revenue Board, Natural Resources and Environment Board, as well as local authorities including the Sri Aman District Council, Sibu local authorities, Bintulu Development Authority and Miri City Council," said Lim in a statement on Wednesday (April 8)

He said all arrested individuals and seized items had been handed to the relevant authorities for further action under their laws. Lim added that the Sarawak General Operations Force Brigade planned to continue such joint enforcement operations.
