Malaysia ready to support peace efforts in US-Iran conflict, says Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia stands ready to support and complement ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Wednesday (April 8), Anwar voiced support for Iran’s 10-point proposal, which he said had been positively received by the United States, describing it as a step towards restoring peace and stability.

He expressed hope that the negotiations would be conducted in good faith and with firm resolve to secure a lasting resolution to the region’s issues.

“Peace talks cannot succeed if the proceedings are cloaked in deception and double-dealing,” he said.

Anwar said it was crucial that the 10-point plan be translated into a comprehensive peace agreement, not only for Iran but also for Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

He added that all parties must ensure an end to the genocide and dispossession of the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza.

Anwar also extended his congratulations and appreciation to Pakistan and its Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for what he described as tireless and courageous diplomacy that helped bring about the breakthrough.

He said Pakistan’s willingness to engage all sides without fear or favour reflected the highest traditions of Muslim solidarity and international responsibility.

Anwar further called on the international community to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access to all civilian populations affected by the conflict.

“Let this be a turning point towards lasting peace. The world cannot afford for it to be anything less,” he said.

Separately, the Foreign Ministry welcomed the reported two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step towards de-escalating tensions and restoring peace and stability in the region.

Malaysia urged all parties to fully respect and implement the ceasefire terms in good faith, while refraining from actions that could undermine the fragile stability.

The ministry also stressed that diplomacy remains the only viable path to resolving conflicts and called on the international community to support ongoing efforts towards a durable and peaceful resolution.
