Middle East conflict's impact on foreign tourist arrivals among focus of today's Dewan Rakyat sitting


KUALA LUMPUR: The impact of the West Asian conflict on foreign tourist arrivals to Malaysia and the readiness of assets and personnel of security agencies in Langkawi in addressing the threat of smuggling activities of migrants are among the focus of Monday's (June 29) Dewan Rakyat sitting.

According to the Order Paper published on the official Parliament website, Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi (PN-Kuala Kedah) will ask the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister to state the how the conflict in West Asia has affected the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Malaysia, particularly from the Middle Eastern, European and West Asian markets, and the Government's strategies to sustain the growth momentum of the tourism sector.

Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (PN-Langkawi) will ask the Home Minister to state the readiness of assets and personnel of security agencies in Langkawi in addressing the threat of smuggling activities of migrants or controlled goods, as well as territorial waters intrusion, given Langkawi's position near the Malaysia-Thailand border, and whether the ministry intends to establish the use of drone assets (UAVs) as per the previous application

Also, Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) will ask the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister about the effectiveness of the additional Ecological Fiscal Transfer (EFT) funds and Perhilitan community programmes in reducing human-elephant conflict, and what is the Ministry's synergy plan with relevant agencies to expand the use of Electric Fencing for Elephants (SPEG) to protect the safety of local residents.

Meanwhile, Datuk Willie anak Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) will ask the Housing and Local Government Minister to state the number of unsold affordable homes by state and price category as well as the actual rate of home ownership among young people under the age of 35 by state and Parliamentary constituency.

In addition, two bills - the Sexual Offences against Children (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Employment Insurance System (Amendment) Bill 2025 - will be tabled for the second reading during today's session.

The current Parliament sitting will last for 16 days till July 16. – Bernama
