IPOH: A man was sentenced to six months’ jail by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to possessing an obscene child pornography video.
Idham Rhusla Mohamad Shahuri, 42, entered his plea after being charged under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 before judge Jean Sharmila Jesudason on Wednesday (April 8).
He was ordered to serve the jail term from the date of his arrest on April 6.
The court also ordered that he be placed under police supervision for three years after completing his prison sentence, and that he undergo rehabilitation counselling sessions during that period.
Idham Rhusla was found to be in possession of one child pornographic video on his mobile phone at a house in Kampung Sadang Blanja Kiri, Perak Tengah, on April 6 at about 12.51pm.
The court was also told that he had downloaded the child pornography video from a Telegram group onto his phone.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Arfahanim Azureen Arfanuddin urged the court to impose a heavy sentence as a deterrent not only to the accused but also to the public, noting the increasing spread of obscene materials.
Lawyer Kathan Maruthamuthu, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented the accused, appealed for a lighter imprisonment term.
He said the accused earns about RM1,800 a month and is a widower with two children, one who has completed SPM and another who is in Form Four.
He also has a 77-year-old father to care for.
He added that the accused had pleaded guilty at an early stage, saving the court time and costs.
