Govt mulls steps to ease students’ living costs

KUALA LUMPUR: Measures are being considered to assist the campus community, particularly students, in coping with the potential rise in the cost of living following the worsening global energy crisis, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (pic).

The Higher Education Minister noted that the crisis has had a significant impact not only on the global economy but also on the financial management of staff, academics and students in higher education institutions.

As such, he said several representatives of the National Student Consultative Council (MPPK) met with him on Friday to discuss measures to help the campus community cope with possible increases in the cost of living, including food prices and daily necessities.

“Several ideas and proposals were presented. I have instructed the relevant officers to examine the matter seriously and give it due attention.

“I will announce the plans, as well as the initial measures proposed by the ministry to address this issue, soon,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Zambry emphasised that it was important for students’ voices to not only be heard but also translated into action by the ministry.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that education would continue to be among the government’s top priorities despite the current global uncertainty caused by the energy crisis.

He said this was to ensure the quality of education for future generations would not be affected.
