PETALING JAYA: Increased public participation through the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) app has contributed to a drop in crime cases during Op Selamat 26 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year.
Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the operation reflected stronger collaboration between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the public in preventing crime during the festive season.
“The implementation of Op Selamat 26 reflects improved collaboration between police and the community, particularly through the use of the VSP application and more structured, targeted crime prevention strategies,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 1).
He said the use of the complaint module via the VSP application increased from 80 cases recorded during Op Selamat 24 (March 29 to April 3, 2025) to 150 cases during Op Selamat 26 (March 19 to 24).
The balik kampung notification module also saw a sharp rise from 8,036 submissions previously to 16,889 this year, while usage of the panic button feature increased from five to seven cases.

“In the same period, index crime showed a positive development with a reduction of 111 cases, from 858 cases in the last year to 747 cases this year,” he added.
Comm Yusri said a total of 61,122 checks were conducted on houses left vacant during the festive period, along with 31,636 mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) rounds.
This compares to 76,274 house checks and 37,429 MPV patrols recorded during Op Selamat 24.
He noted that the positive trend in crime reduction allowed patrols and house visits to be carried out more comprehensively and effectively.
“As of March 30, VSP membership has reached 1,705,852 users, reflecting the increasing level of public awareness and commitment in jointly preventing crime with police,” he said.
He added that police would continue to strengthen crime prevention strategies through patrols, enforcement and community engagement.
“Guided by the slogan ‘Polis dan Masyarakat Berpisah Tiada’, this synergy is expected to further enhance the nation’s safety and well-being,” he said.
