94.4% of Perak SPM candidates qualify for certificates

IPOH: About 94.4% of the 27,722 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates from public schools in Perak last year are eligible to receive their certificates.

State Education director Zulkafli Mohamed Mokhtar said 26,182 candidates passed the examinations, which were held from Nov 3 to Dec 23 last year.

He said 26 candidates obtained straight A+ grades, 982 scored all As (A+, A, A-), 6,348 earned credits (B+, B, C+, C) and 9,954 achieved a minimum pass (D, E).

“In 2024, 25,774 candidates were eligible for the certificate, so there has been an increase,” he said at a press conference here on Tuesday (March 31).

The State Average Grade for 2025 improved to 4.49, compared with 4.63 in 2024 and 4.75 in 2023.

Zulkafli also said 336 candidates did not sit for SPM last year, compared with 479 in 2024.

He said the ministry’s efforts to encourage students to sit for the examination had improved overall attendance.

According to him, the main reasons candidates did not sit for the exam included family issues and dropping out of school.

“Some 168 registered candidates did not turn up because they are working and may feel their current income is sufficient,” he said.

Other reasons for absence included death, health problems, accidents and moving abroad.
