KOTA TINGGI: Applications by several former Umno leaders, including Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Khairy Jamaluddin, to rejoin the party will be tabled at the Umno supreme council meeting on April 17, says party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He added that the discussions would be guided by the spirit of “Rumah Bangsa”, although the decision on the applications would not necessarily be announced at the meeting.
“I will bring this to the supreme council meeting based on the spirit of Rumah Bangsa, as well as the spirit of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Ramadan.
“We view this as something positive and we are optimistic that there will be a good outcome towards realising the Rumah Bangsa concept,” he said after launching the JanaVeteran programme in Teluk Sengat here yesterday.
To a question on how many former Umno leaders have submitted applications, Khaled, who is chairman of the Rumah Bangsa unity committee, said the party was still in the process of receiving and compiling them.
He added that there is currently no deadline set for former leaders or members to submit their applications.
Among those previously suspended from Umno are Hishammuddin, former information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan, Jempol Umno chief Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Sharif and former Tebrau Umno chief Datuk Maulizan Bujang.
Their party membership were suspended for six years.
Former Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar and Khairy, meanwhile, were sacked for offences committed during the 15th General Election.
The suspension and expulsions were decided by the Umno supreme council on Jan 27, 2023.
