Three suspects out on bail in Penang fireworks blaze case


NIBONG TEBAL: Three people detained over a fireworks stall that caught fire in Taman Pekaka here have been released on bail.

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said they were released while investigations continue, including recording statements from several more witnesses, before the investigation paper is referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP).

"Police still need to record statements from two to three more witnesses and also the full report from the Fire and Rescue Department," he said when contacted on Thursday (March 26).

The three individuals, including a woman, were remanded for three days since March 23 for investigations under Section 286 of the Penal Code for negligence in handling explosive materials.

Meanwhile, Penang Fire Department director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said investigations are expected to be completed within 14 days.

In the incident early Sunday (March 22), a stall selling various types of fireworks in Taman Pekaka was destroyed in a fire.

A motorcycle was 90% damaged as well as three air-conditioning units at a nearby house.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

A video went viral on social media, showing customers at a nearby restaurant scrambling to avoid sparks from fireworks. – Bernama
