Sensitivities considered during festive season ops, says Immigration Dept D-G

PETALING JAYA: While immigration enforcement activities are conducted around the clock including during festive seasons, sensitivities are also taken into consideration, says the Immigration Department.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the department took into account the sensitivities of foreign nationals celebrating festivities away from their families and that inspections are conducted in a professional and considerate manner.

"This approach also aims to reduce anxiety and discomfort among the local community, particularly in public hotspots," he said.

He added that between March 20 and March 24, the department conducted 45 inspections and monitoring operations nationwide, leading to a total of 3,826 foreigners being inspected.

These operations were conducted in a planned manner to ensure that enforcement actions are carried out in an orderly, controlled and high-integrity manner.

Enforcement officers on the ground are constantly reminded to adhere to discipline and the established SOPs, while also respecting cultural sensitivities and local norms in the execution of their duties.

"Immigration enforcement is not limited to any particular season, as violations of the law can occur at any time.

"From a tactical perspective, certain periods, including festive seasons, can enhance detection effectiveness based on movement patterns and concentrations of individuals in specific locations," he said, adding that all actions were based on intelligence and enforcement needs.

He reiterated that the department remains committed to balancing law enforcement and sensitivity toward societal norms.

"Every action is carried out based on the principles of professionalism, integrity and responsibility in safeguarding national security and sovereignty, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani," he said.
