Mercy flight transports life-saving organ for transplant

KLUANG: A donated kidney was flown to Kuala Lumpur from Johor via a mercy flight conducted by the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

Johor Fire and Rescue Operations assistant director Senior Fire Supt I Muhammad Tarmizi Md Jaafar said the mission was undertaken following a request from the National Transplant Centre at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, which received the organ from the Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital here.

He said the department deployed its air assets to transport the organ retrieval team with medical equipment yesterday.

The operation utilised a Mi-17 helicopter with a crew of nine, led by Deputy Fire Superintendent II Mohd Faizal Abd Latif, along with three medical personnel and approximately 40kg of equipment, he said. The helicopter landed at the pick-up location, SMK Jalan Kota Tinggi, at noon before departing for Universiti Kuala Lumpur in Subang.

“This mission was categorised as a medical evacuation operation, which required swift action and close coordination among agencies to ensure the organ remained in optimal condition for transplantation to the recipient,” he said, Bernama reported.

Muhammad Tarmizi said the urgency of the mission was critical, as the organ needed to be transferred in a short period of time to maintain its function and quality before transplantation.

“The close cooperation between the Health Ministry and JBPM clearly reflects the commitment and efficiency of government agencies in saving lives through organ donation efforts,” he added.
