According to Nizam, it is important to ensure that the selected candidate meets the people’s expectations and can fulfil the aspirations of the unity government.

"The candidate... must be accepted by the people and be able to provide the best service," he told reporters at his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house held at the Tawau Community Hall on Monday (March 23).

Nizam, who is also Sabah’s Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Minister, added that the party machinery remains active and continues its work on the ground after last year's state election.

"I am confident that the people will continue to support the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor," he said.

Gagasan Rakyat, led by Hajiji, is the anchor party of the four-member Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

Fellow GRS component Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) currently holds the Tawau seat through Datuk Lo Su Fui.
