KUCHING: The Sarawak government is considering a proposal to elevate the Sungai Asap subdistrict to a full district named Apau Koyan, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The Premier said this was part of efforts to ensure a more efficient and responsive administration at grassroots level.
"The proposal is not only about changing an administrative status but is a strategic step to strengthen the government's service delivery, speed up development and focus specifically on the needs of the people in the area," he said in his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message on Thursday (March 19).
Abang Johari said the proposed elevation would lead to better development planning and local administrative capabilities, besides generating more economic opportunities for the local population.
He added that the state government was committed to ensuring rural and remote areas were not left out of development.
"Every area has its own potential. It is our responsibility to maximise that potential for the people's wellbeing," he said.
Abang Johari also called on Sarawakians to preserve the unity and harmony that are Sarawak's strengths.
He said Aidilfitri was a time to strengthen relationships, forgive each other and appreciate Sarawak's diversity.
"The open house tradition in Sarawak reflects our inclusivity and multicultural harmony.
"This is what makes us unique - living in unity and one spirit amid our diversity," he said.
On a personal note, Abang Johari said he and his family will not hold a Raya open house as a mark of respect for his late wife Puan Sri Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, who passed away in June last year.
Nevertheless, he extended Raya greetings to those celebrating.
"Maaf Zahir dan Batin. May this Syawal bring joy and blessings in our lives," he added.
